About Us
Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation) was established in 2006 to receive and manage the benefits transferred under the OFA to the MG People, who are recognised under Australian law as holding Native Title over large areas in the North of Western Australia’s east Kimberley region.
In 2025, MG Corp. received funding over 3.5 years under DPLH’s Native Title Capacity Building Program to support MG Corp. engage with relevant stakeholders, Government and statutory processes in relation to the Aboriginal Heritage Act and its operation. Funding was made available to employ staff to co-ordinate and assist in Heritage activities.
MG Corp is looking for a Male Cultural Support Officer to join our expanding Lands and Management Unit to assist in delivering Cultural, heritage and land management services in line with MG CORP’s role as nominated heritage service provider for the MG people.
The Position
The position supports MG Corp’s heritage unit team function to undertake its heritage activities. The male Cultural Support Officer will work alongside our newly appointed Anthropologist to liaise with senior male law holders and members. The male Cultural Support Officer will be responsible for assisting with the conducting of Cultural Heritage Surveys with our Elders on sites identified as Men’s areas. The role will also be expected to conduct meetings and on country trips with Male Elders to assist in protecting, recording and maintaining important Cultural and Heritage information.
The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in working with Indigenous Communities with an emphasis on engagement, cultural competency and heritage activities. Strong knowledge of Miriuwung and Gajerrong Culture would be an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake trips on country to identify and record men’s Heritage areas.
- Ensure all trips on country comply with MG Corp’s WHS and Cultural Safety procedures.
- Assist in record keeping such as report writing and GPS mapping and store electronic information according to Cultural protocols.
- Support the development of documents in relation to identification, protection and management of Male Aboriginal heritage information.
- Co-ordinate Cultural mapping surveys on new and existing relating to Men’s areas in line with DPLH Survey Standards.
- Provide Cultural advice to the Lands and Heritage Unit relating to Men’s areas.
- Seek advice from the Garralyel, Dawang Councils and the Manager of Strategic Government Relations Lands and Heritage in respect of undertaking heritage Surveys and documenting areas of significance.
- Assist in the registration of Heritage Sites as directed by Male Elders and line Manager
- Adhere to MG CORP policies and procedures.
- Any other duties as directed by the line manager.
- Conduct risk management assessments and devise risk mitigation plans for trips on country.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Previous fieldwork experience – working on heritage, environment or ranger surveys and activities.
- Sound knowledge of Aboriginal cultural heritage management issues relevant to the Kimberley including current legislation.
- Managing information systems to maintain records and generate reports.
- Experience in working with small teams and with minimal direction.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills.
- Ability to successfully work remotely and autonomously.
- Cleared National Police Check.
- Drivers’ License (C Class.)
- Working with Children Check
Desirable
- Eligible for membership of MG Corporation.
- An understanding of and previous experience working with indigenous communities, preferably within the Kimberley region.
- Experience in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint and GIS software.
Location and Remuneration
Kununurra based role offering a generous salary package. Base salary, superannuation, salary packaging and allowances. The base salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
