About Us
Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation) was established in 2006 to receive and manage the benefits transferred under the OFA to the MG People, who are recognised under Australian law as holding Native Title over large areas in the North of Western Australia’s east Kimberley region.
In 2025, MG Corp. received funding over 3.5 years under DPLH’s Native Title Capacity Building Program to support MG Corp. engage with relevant stakeholders, Government and statutory processes in relation to the Aboriginal Heritage Act and its operation. Funding was made available to employ staff to co-ordinate and assist in Heritage activities.
MG Corp is looking for a Heritage Officer to deliver heritage and land management services in line with MG CORP’s role as nominated heritage service provider for the MG people.

The Position
The position supports the heritage function to meet legal, regulatory and agreement responsibilities. The Heritage Officer will liaise with internal and external stakeholders including the MG Corp management team and staff, elders, members and various commercial, government and non-government stakeholders to ensure timely and compliant outcomes for the corporation. The Heritage Officer will be responsible for arranging and overseeing Cultural Heritage Surveys in response to requests by proponents to undertake activities on MG Lands.
The Heritage Officer will have demonstrated experience in working with Indigenous Communities with an emphasis on engagement, cultural competency and heritage activities
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the development of policies and procedures that support the efficient management of the MG Corp Cultural Heritage business unit and supportive working environment.
- Contribute to the development of MG Corp’s information technological capabilities such as record keeping, ArcGIS training.
- Support the development of frameworks, guides and standard documents in relation to identification, protection and management of Aboriginal heritage and interaction with third parties.
- Coordinate surveys in accordance with DPLH’s Aboriginal Heritage Survey Standards and associated native title and heritage agreements and relevant legislation on requests from third parties.
- Co-ordinate Cultural mapping surveys on new Conservation and existing conservation estates on MG country.
- Oversee the development and efficient management of a roster of MG Corp. people to work on heritage surveys.
- Seek advice from the Garralyel, Dawang Councils and the Manager of Strategic Government Relations Lands and Heritage in respect of undertaking heritage Surveys.
- Coordinate, document and report on field work involving heritage surveys, consultations with TOs and assist in the registration of Heritage Sites.
- Prepare correspondence and documents relating to heritage surveys and reports to the Manager Strategic Government Relations Lands and Heritage.
- Reporting monthly on all activities in line with the funding contract using the Monthly Reporting Sheet.
- Under the direction of the Manager of Strategic Government Relations liaise with mining companies, government and consultants from time to time.
- Ensure that draft heritage survey reports are provided in a timely manner and in a format that complies with the AHA.
- Undertake effective, culturally sensitive and timely communications on heritage matters with MG Corp. people and survey participants.
- Develop strategies and initiatives to assist MG Corp. people to identify and protect areas of cultural significance.
- Liaise with and assist native title and heritage advisors, other relevant service providers as required.
- Prepare correspondence as required.
- Manage specialist projects such as:
- Program for intergeneration and interfamily cultural knowledge exchange between Members.
- Ethnobotanical and Ethnozoological cultural knowledge documentation
- Management of other environmental, heritage or cultural matters as directed.
- Adhere to MG CORP policies and procedures, the Rule Book, Code of Conduct and all other legislative requirements as directed and amended by MG CORP.
- Any other duties as directed by the line manager or executive team.
- Contribute to a culturally safe working environment through implementation of relevant MG policies and procedures for Survey Participants.
- Conduct risk management assessments and devise risk mitigation plans for trips on country to undertake Cultural Surveys.
- Develop a budget for each Cultural Survey undertaken and associated costs for approval by the manager of Strategic Government Relations, Lands and Heritage.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Previous fieldwork experience – working on heritage, environment or ranger surveys and activities.
- Sound knowledge of Aboriginal cultural heritage management issues relevant to the Kimberley including current legislation.
- An understanding of contemporary factors influencing Aboriginal people and communities.
- Managing information systems to maintain records and generate reports.
- Experience in working with small teams and with minimal direction.
- Ability to build partnerships and engage with a wide diversity of people.
- Sound financial acumen.
- Working knowledge of the WA ACH Act 1972.
- Proven track record of project management and delivery.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills.
- Ability to successfully work remotely and autonomously.
- Cleared National Police Check.
- Drivers’ License (C Class.)
Desirable
- A current Australian Driver’s Licence (manual).
- An understanding of and previous experience working with indigenous communities, preferably within the Kimberley region.
- Experience in undertaking a range of administrative duties with intermediate level MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint and GIS software.
Location and Remuneration
Kununurra based role offering a generous salary package. Base salary, superannuation, salary packaging and allowances. The base salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
