About Us
Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation) was established in 2006 to receive and manage the benefits transferred under the OFA to the MG People, who are recognised under Australian law as holding Native Title over large areas in the North of Western Australia’s east Kimberley region.

The Position
A person with cultural knowledge and demonstrated experience working with Elders and cultural protocols is needed to develop and grow the MG Corporation Ranger Team and implement various Ranger activities as identified in the Project Plan including land management projects, cultural integrity and sustainability.
The Ranger Coordinator (RC) will be expected to support positive engagement of the MG Corporation Rangers within the community and build a team of confident and culturally competent Rangers through proper mentoring and training opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Organisation & Implementation
- Ensuring that the MG Corporation Ranger program and work activities remain consistent with Traditional Owners’ aspirations.
- Coordinating logistical and administrative support of land management to protect Country, Culture and Community.
- Working with various expert consultants, Elders and partners to deliver successful Ranger partnership projects and programs that are sustainable.
Supervising, Mentoring, Training & Communication
- Developing and retaining the MG Corporation Ranger Team and contributing to building a positive culture.
- Supervising and mentoring the MG Corporation Ranger team, ensuring activities are performed in a timely and safe manner and to develop their personal and project skills, leadership abilities and work ethic.
- Coordinating delivery of training to ensure staff are suitably qualified to use the required assets safely and competently by maximising on-the-job training opportunities, ensuring practical learning outcomes during fieldwork.
- Ensuring formal certification of the MG Corporation Rangers to solidify both confidence and competence in the Ranger Team and support positive engagement of the Rangers within the community.
- Coordinating regular land patrols of associated MG Corporation Ranger projects.
- Keeping the MG Corporation management informed on the health and wellbeing of Country.
Health & Safety & Cultural Capacity Building
- Facilitating a culturally safe working environment through implementation of relevant policies and procedures.
- Focusing on MG cultural integrity and sustainability via working closely with our local language and Arts centre and through our respective traditional elders of the specific areas.
- Co-ordinating management of critical field tools and equipment, through effective asset management and maintenance to ensure MG Corporation Rangers can access critical field equipment as needed to implement MG Corporation Ranger projects and achieve objectives.
- Maintaining spatial and other data records of activities undertaken.
General Corporation Administration
- Liason with members and cultural protocols appropriately.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and professional approach, when dealing with incoming and outgoing communications (e.g., telephone, electronic, hard copy and in person)
both with members and other parties. - Participate in performance reviews and professional development as required, including undertaking further training.
- Performing other duties as requested by the MG Corp, Management and R31165 committee.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- MG cultural knowledge and connection to country or Qualifications in Land Management or similar or relevant similar experience.
- Demonstrable ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with Traditional Owners to manage and support the delivery of Ranger projects.
- Demonstrated cultural experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities.
- Ability to work with a team as a team leader with minimal supervision and at times, in remote areas.
- Good communication skills, ability to work with Elders, and to both lead and support as a member of a team in an indigenous-led organisation.
- Ability to comply with Health, Safety and Environment requirements.
- Ability to manage logistics for remote fieldwork.
- Current police clearance and valid driver’s license; off-road experience and recovery skills. Maintaining a licence is a condition of ongoing employment in this role.
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Indigenous social and cultural challenges and a willingness to commit to community empowerment, training and development.
- Willingness to move/live in Kununurra, Western Australia.
Desirable
- Experience using computers and basic administration skills
- Technical or trade skills relevant to the ranger program (i.e., fencing, construction, fire and weed management, GIS, cultural mapping, plant and animal identification, small engine maintenance, erosion remediation, water monitoring).
Location and Remuneration
Kununurra based role offering a generous salary package. Base salary, superannuation, salary packaging and allowances. The base salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
