Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation) was established in 2006 to receive and manage the benefits transferred under the OFA to the MG People, who are recognised under Australian law as holding Native Title over large areas in the North of Western Australia’s east Kimberley region.

The Position
The primary objective of the Women’s Ranger Coordinator is to manage and deliver the MG Corporation strategic vision for Country, Culture and Community by leading our Women Rangers Team. This position is supported by the Manager of Strategic Government Relations, Lands and Heritage.
The role will support the MG Corporation Peoples’ aspiration to develop and implement a MG Women’s Ranger Team to establish and sustain various Ranger activities for the long-term benefit of the MG Corporation’s People and their Country, Culture and Community.
The Women’s Ranger Coordinator will demonstrate leadership skills and have relevant experience working in working with Indigenous People and in land related activities. This new team is part of MG Corp.’s vision to grow our Ranger teams to encourage MG people to work on MG Country.
The role will support the newly established Women’s Ranger team deliver the Heritage and Land Management Objectives contained in the Matsu Iron Ore Project Co-Existence Agreement including but not limited to protecting Heritage Sites, providing advice in the Mining Operations Area, supporting Cultural Awareness of new staff, and rehabilitation activities as required.
In addition to the above agreement the position will lead the women rangers to undertake activities on MG Country outside the Mining Operations area and implement various Ranger activities as identified in the Service Project Plan including water monitoring, fire management, fauna monitoring, weed management, regeneration and other land management Ranger projects on MG lands.
The Women’s Ranger Coordinator will be expected to support positive engagement of the MG Corporation Rangers within the community and build a team of confident and competent Women Rangers through mentoring and training opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
The Women’s Ranger Coordinator is responsible for day-to-day decision making relating to the operations of the ranger team, including Program and Funding Compliance, the expenditure of funding and the management of assets and financial accounts as directed.
Organisation & Implementation
- Supporting the implementing Ranger initiatives outlined in the Project Plan.
- Ensuring that the MG Corporation Ranger program and work activities remain consistent with Traditional Owners’ aspirations.
- Coordinating logistical and administrative support of land management to protect Country, Culture and Community.
- Working with various expert consultants and partners to deliver successful Ranger partnership projects and programs.
- Building workforce capacity to deliver the MG Corporation Ranger initiatives, in partnership with various stakeholders including community members, mining companies, government and NGOs.
- Planning and delivering the MG Corporation Women’s Ranger program in accordance with funding guidelines and direction of management.
- Work with Traditional Owners to ensure that the land is managed in line with MG Cultural protocols.
- Work in partnership with the MG Rangers team and Heritage Unit Staff.
Supervising, Mentoring & Training
- Managing, recruiting, developing and retaining the MG Corporation Ranger Team.
- Supervising and mentoring the MG Corporation Women’s Ranger team, ensuring activities are performed in a timely and safe manner.
- Working with the MG Women Rangers to develop their personal and project skills, leadership abilities and work ethic.
- Coordinating delivery of training to ensure staff are suitably qualified to use the required assets safely and competently.
- Maximising on-the-job training opportunities, ensuring practical learning outcomes during fieldwork.
- Ensuring formal certification of the MG Women Rangers to solidify both confidence and competence in the Ranger Team and support positive engagement of the Rangers within the community.
- Coordinating regular land patrols of associated MG Corporation Ranger projects.
Reporting, Monitoring & Evaluation
- Organising data collection, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on MG Corporation Ranger project outcomes.
- Keeping the Manager of Strategic Government Relations, Lands and Heritage informed on the health and wellbeing of Country.
- Completing records and associated paperwork in relation to MG Women Ranger activities, training, and program delivery, in accordance with organisational and reporting requirements.
- Co-ordinating management of critical field tools and equipment, through effective asset management to ensure MG Corporation Rangers can access critical field equipment as needed to implement MG Women Ranger projects and achieve objectives.
- Preparing authentic, high-quality reports and budgets for funding bodies and partners.
- Coordinating regular asset and infrastructure maintenance including all tools, equipment and vehicles (4WDs, trailers and boats).
- Maintaining spatial and other data records of activities undertaken.
Health & Safety
- Establishing a safety-first workplace culture.
- Ensuring safety policies and procedures are paramount in all activities and ensuring MG Field Trip and Risk Management Procedures are followed.
- Identifying and supporting the development of policies and procedures that ensure the safety of staff, facilities and initiatives.
- Facilitating a culturally safe working environment through implementation of relevant policies and procedures.
- Assisting in the management of contracts, budgets and the development of fee-for-service opportunities.
- Ensuring that the administrative procedures and financial management practices of the MG Women’s Ranger team are effective and consistently applied.
- Building productive project partnerships, with community, government agencies, and other organisations.
- Performing other duties as requested by MG Management.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Qualifications In Natural Resource Management, Land Management other similar experience.
- Demonstrable ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with Traditional Owners to manage and support the delivery of Ranger projects.
- Practical experience in planning and implementing projects and activities related to land management programs on Aboriginal lands.
- Demonstrated experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities.
- Experience working with a team as a team leader with minimal supervision and at times, in remote locations.
- Demonstrated capacity to remain focused, positive, adaptive and organised in a challenging and dynamic work environment.
- High-level communication skills and written skills, including ability to work with Elders and as a member of a team in an Indigenous-led organisation.
- Sound knowledge of risk management procedures and practical experience implementing Health, Safety and Environment legislative requirements.
- Project management skills, including capacity to manage logistics for remote fieldwork.
- Ability to work within a program budget.
- An ability to build networks and develop sustainable partnerships, working with the needs of a diverse range of relevant stakeholders.
- Current valid driver’s license; off-road experience and recovery skills.
- Willingness to move/live in Kununurra, Western Australia.
- A current WA C Class Driver’s Licence.
- Provide a National Police Check.
- Ability to secure a WWC.

Desirable
- Previous experience leading Aboriginal Ranger teams or other land management teams.
- High level of computer literacy and proficiency with PC’s including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, GPS and mapping software.
- Skills relevant to the ranger program (i.e., fencing, construction, fire and weed management, GIS, cultural mapping, plant and animal identification, small engine maintenance, erosion remediation, water monitoring).
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Indigenous social and cultural challenges and a willingness to commit to community empowerment, training and development.
Location and Remuneration
Kununurra based role offering a generous salary package. Base salary, superannuation, salary packaging and allowances. The base salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
