Youth hostel collaboration with Wunan

MG Corporation has been collaborating with Wunan Foundation to repurpose an empty 40-bed hostel.

The hostel’s original purpose was to house remote Indigenous children so they could attend high school in Kununurra. However, only one student was found to be staying there in 2020 with six full-time staff.

MG Corporation executive chair Lawford Benning said possible streams for operational funding were being investigated.

“MG Corporation and Wunan are working together to decide on an appropriate use for the space, which will potentially include providing a safe place for young people around Kununurra,” Mr Benning said.

Wunan Foundation and MG Corporaton have since had discussions with Aboriginal Hostels Limited to discuss a new purpose for the facility.

MG Corporation believes the now-empty facility should be used as a safe haven for young Indigenous people who may need a place to stay at night.

This is stony country – when I walk across this country where the creeks and the floodwaters have been there are lots of rocks and little stones. Lots of those stones are beautiful coloured ones. We call them gerany. Gerany is also the word for money.
